Renounce vs. Denounce

When it comes to leaving a secret society we are sometimes asked what’s the difference between renounce and denounce, so we will briefly explain...

Both words are applicable when coming out of a secret society which is why you will see them used interchangeably; however, they do have different meanings. Renounce means “giving up or abandoning something,” while Denounce means “to publicly speak against something or someone”.

  • The word “renounce” is a verb and means “to formally give up a thing.” It derives from French and Latin words “renuncer” and “renuntiare.” Additional meanings are to formally reject, abandon a viewpoint, commit to stop doing or having something.

  • The word “denounce” is also a verb, and derives from French and Latin words “denuncier” and “denuntiare.” Additional meanings are to make known in a formal manner, openly condemn, declare or proclaim to be cursed, wicked, or evil (e.g. denouncing atheism).

When separating from a secret society one must acknowledge their sin, repent to The Lord God and renounce being part of the organization and all ties to it. To denounce is to share God’s truth of how it’s not compatible with being a true born-again follower of Jesus Christ.

If you've come out of a secret society, don't be silent, share God's truth on the matter, be it in person or via social media (which has become a widely used tool to share the truth of Jesus Christ). Although social media can be a great tool for The Gospel, do not neglect speaking with people personally such as your family and friends, especially if you have children. Regarding children, remember Proverbs 22:6:“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Youth are targeted for secret societies because just like with anything else, the enemy comes after those who are young and impressionable.

Be sure to also share your testimony with people in your church, community groups where you volunteer, ETC. Of course be led by God’s Holy Spirit on how and when to broach the subject, just keep in mind this sin needs to be addressed just as much as other sins because MANY are deceived.
